How Muslims made Periyar bend a knee, whereas he continued to abuse Hindus regardless of protests

3 min read

A putting facet of the Dravidian model of rationalism is the way it assaults solely Hindu beliefs and icons and could be very cautious to by no means critique the beliefs and practices of another faith. Let us peer again in historical past and see if it was at all times so.
Dravidian publications and rationalist critique
In Kuti Arasu, EV Ramasamy’s journal, an essay titled – “Why Purdah must be abolished” – was revealed on 14-10-1928. On 4-11-1929, M S Hussain Saheb, writing for Kuti Arasu, wrote in an essay titled “The Injustice of Purdah” –
“Men and women must be allowed to see each other freely and intermingle, so that they may wed based on mutual attraction and understanding. Can a man have any greater pleasure than a wife of his heart’s desire? Why must we hide our women behind a visual prison in the name of religion?”
In 3-3-1929, Kuti Arasu revealed one other essay – “Islam and the Self-Respect Movement”, wherein they decried the clergy as “Pauranika liars” who would cheat younger Muslims and mislead them away from the trail of rationalism and making enlightened decisions for themselves.
On Jun 17, 1932, a Self-Respect Conference was held in Mannargudi underneath the chairship of Smt Kunjitham, a younger graduate and spouse of “Kuthoosi” Gurusami, EV Ramasamy”s confidante. In this, Smt Kunjitham spoke –
“The Congress underneath Mr Gandhi desires to maintain Hindu, Muslim and Christian faiths as they’re and search unity amongst all Indians. However, we want to destroy all such spiritual faiths as we consider solely freedom from such religion can result in social unity.“
The backlash
P. Kalifullah, a Muslim League chief and someday collaborator of the Justice Party management, overtly stated that if the Self-Respect Movement needed to acquire any assist amongst Muslims of South India, they need to surrender on the behavior of making use of their ideas of atheism to Islam. The Dar-ul-Islam, a Tamil publication wrote in opposition to the thought of Dravidian race politics and cautioned “The Tirukkural could also be one other Holy Book and Tiruvalluvar one other Prophet in a Dravida Nadu“. In Aiyampettai, a small city in Thanjavur District, the native jamaat excommunicated all Muslim members of the Self-Respect Movement.
The climbdown
By November 1935, EV Ramasamy wrote –
“If, to shun the faith that imposes untouchability on them,  Ambedkar and his followers flip to Islam for succour quite than to atheism, we’d not have any objections to it.“
Ramanathapuram Baghdad Sahib writing in “Madras Mail” in January 1939 –
“Periyar is a Muslim inside. His plan is to outwardly keep within the Hindu religion and ship the Depressed Classes over to Islam“. There was no objection from any quarters to this declare.
In the Kuti Arasu editorial of April 17, 1947, EV Ramasamy wrote –
“In a Dravidian Government, Muslims and Christians shall be considered teams pleasant to the Dravidians. Muslims, being Dravidians, will need to have equal rights over the Tamil Land. Except for the small matter of faith, there isn’t any means by which one can divide the Islamic and non-Islamic Dravidians“.
The capitulation
Writing in Viduthalai on July 15, 1947, EV Ramasamy –
“There is so much in common with the original Dravidian religion and Islam. The Arab word for Dravidian religion is Islam. When the Aryan faith was sought to be forced on our people, the Prophet Muhammed revived our people”s authentic religion via Islam“.
Addressing the Trichy Employees Association in March 1947, he stated –
“Before Islam, Christianity, Shiva, Rama or Krishna, we Dravidians had our own pristine religion. Do not think Islam is an invention of the Prophet or that the Sahibs (Urdu speaking Muslims of Madras Presidency), Rowthers, Marakkaiyars or Mappillas are the sole Muslims of this land”.
As we are able to see, the slightest resistance from the Indian Muslim inhabitants was enough to make the Dravidian motion capitulate, whereas the marketing campaign of abuse and calumny in opposition to Hinduism has gone on for many years, inspite of large unfold protests.
