Uttarakhand govt constitutes panel to implement Uniform Civil Code

NEW DELHI: Moving a step nearer to implementing the Uniform Civil Code (UCC), the BJP-ruled Uttarakhand on Friday constituted a drafting committee to report back to the federal government on the
matter. 

Recently, Uttarakhand CM Pushkar Singh Dhami had mentioned that his state could be second after Goa to implement the Uniform Civil Code “to ensure equality in the law to all.”  

The drafting committee can be headed by retired Supreme Court decide Ranjana Desai. The panel may have Delhi High Court decide Pramod Kohli ex-state chief secretary and former IAS officer Shatrughan Sinha, Manu Guad and  Sureksh Dangwal (VC of Doon University)  as members.

Official sources mentioned that state governor Gurmit Singh has accepted the structure of the committee. 

As the UCC advocates for a single regulation for all Indian residents on points like divorce, marriages, custody, inheritance and adoption, Uttarakhand is dedicated to bringing it for this function.

BJP sources say that subsequent to Uttarakhand, UP and different BJP-ruled states will transfer in the direction of implementing Uniform Civil Code by correct Constitutional provisions. 

Meanwhile, Uttarakhand CM instructed media individuals that the state has taken a call on it. “We have taken a decision to implement UCC in the state to become the second state after Goa to implement it”, he instructed the media on Friday. Earlier, Himachal Pradesh CM Jai Ram Thakur had additionally mentioned that his state will contemplate implementing the UCC after inspecting it.
