“Originally I had planned to propose properly when she came to India because we had been talking about getting married, but were not taking the court marriage very seriously. We were more concerned about having a proper wedding in a few months. When she was finally able to get out, my mother started planning a ring ceremony, so my proposal would have lacked luster. So, when I was going to the airport, I decided to take the ring to meet her at the airport. I told a couple of my friends and they decided to come along and bring dhol, and it turned into a movie-kind of proposal,” says Anubhav.

Anna was initially scheduled to come back to India in early March, for a court-registered marriage earlier than she may apply for her spousal visa. She would have then gone again to Ukraine to place in her papers at her job, wrap issues up, after which return to India by August.

“Thankfully we had all the documents and papers prepared to get her out of there and into India,” says Anubhav.

COUPLE STRUGGLED TO GET VISA

Also, normally you have to apply from the country of residence. But I found a process called X Miscellanous Visa, which allows for discretionary Visa,” says Anubhav.

After a number of emails over a fraught 10 days, Anna was granted a one-year discretionary Visa and will fly to India.

‘SCARY AND FRUSTRATING IN KYIV’

While her fiancé was attempting to get her to India, Anna was volunteering with coordinating support for folks stranded in war-affected areas. Her employer, an IT firm named SquadUkraine, was donating funds to arrange bunkers, shelters, and arranging transportation to secure areas for his or her workers.

“I have been volunteering online to connect people who need shelters or help. I will continue doing that till the war ends,” says Anna.

Speaking to India Today, Anna says she needs to return to Ukraine to examine on her family and friends, hoping that the warfare will finish quickly.

“It was scary and frustrating to know that this is going on in Kyiv. Initially, no one could believe this could happen in the 21st century. We believed they would be hitting military bases, and not civilian areas. But they were sending missiles to civilian areas. Then you realise this is not safe anymore. There was curfew at night, tension in the air. People couldn’t sleep because of information about multiple waves of attacks,” says Anna.

Internet connectivity and an influence financial institution ensured that the couple may keep up a correspondence at the same time as Anna obtained out of Kyiv and into Poland. Her mom was solely capable of make it out of Ukraine per week after Anna, and her grandmother is staying put in her village in central Ukraine, unable to get out resulting from her age.
