Maldives former president Yameen will get 11-year jail time period

The former president of Maldives, Abdulla Yameen, has been sentenced to 11 years in jail after discovering him responsible of corruption and cash laundering expenses.

By Reuters: The Maldives prison court docket on Sunday sentenced former president Abdulla Yameen to 11 years in jail and fined him $5 million after discovering him responsible of corruption and cash laundering expenses associated to receiving kickbacks from a non-public firm.

Yameen has denied any wrongdoing.

He misplaced energy in 2018 however has been declared presidential candidate for the Progressive Party of the Maldives for an election due in 2023.

Already in 2019 he was sentenced to 5 years in jail and fined $5 million in 2019 for embezzling $1 million in state funds, which the prosecution stated was acquired via the lease of resort improvement rights.

After his sentencing, Yameen was shifted to deal with arrest in 2020 and was freed months later.
