Long-lost letter arrives at London deal with, 100 years after it was posted

Glen (27) and his girlfriend had been befuddled by the sudden mail. “We were obviously pretty surprised and mystified as to how it could have been sat around for more than 100 years,” he said.

The long-lost letter remained lying around at Glen’s home for about a year before he decided to take it to a local historical society to unravel its origins, reported CNN.

Research revealed that the letter was sent in the middle of World War I to Katie Marsh by her friend Christabel Mennell, who was holidaying in Bath, said Stephen Oxford, the editor of local history magazine The Norwood Review.

Katie Marsh was the wife of local stamp magnate Oswald Marsh, while Christabel Mennell was the daughter of a wealthy tea merchant named Henry Tuke Mennell.

The letter was sent two years before World War I rationing was introduced, King George V had been on the throne for five years, and Queen Elizabeth’s birth was a decade away.

Royal Mail said it remained “unsure what occurred on this occasion”. But Oxford said it was likely the letter got lost at a mail sorting office which had closed.

Asked what he would do if the relatives of the sender or recipient got in touch, Glen told the BBC: “It’s a tremendous piece of their household historical past that has turned up – in the event that they need to, they’ll come spherical.”
