India responds to UK Minister’s ‘Indian migrants overstay’ comment

The Indian High Commission within the UK responded to UK Home Secretary Suella Braverman’s comment that mentioned Indians are the “largest group of people who overstay” their visas within the UK.

By India Today Web Desk: India responded to UK Home Secretary Suella Braverman’s comment that branded Indians because the “largest group of people who overstay” their visas within the UK. The Indian High Commission within the UK mentioned that India had initiated motion on all circumstances raised with it below the Migration and Mobility Partnership (MMP).

The High Commission launched a press release saying, As a part of our wider discussions below Migration and Mobility, the federal government of India is dedicated to working with the federal government of the UK to facilitate the return of Indian residents who’ve overstayed their visa interval right here within the UK.

“As per the data shared with the Home Office, as of date, action has been initiated on all of the cases referred to the High Commission. Further, the UK has also undertaken to fulfil certain commitments as part of the Migration and Mobility Protocol, on which we await demonstrable progress,” it added.

Suella Braverman, an Indian-origin British minister, made the comment in an interview for the British weekly journal ‘The Spectator’. She additionally mentioned she had “concerns” over the proposed Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with India.She expressed considerations over the proposed pact on the grounds that it could enhance immigration to the UK.

“I have concerns about having an open borders migration policy with India because I don’t think that’s what people voted for with Brexit,” Braverman instructed ‘The Spectator’.

Meanwhile, Arindam Bagchi, the spokesperson for the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) mentioned that there’s curiosity on either side to conclude the free commerce settlement on the earliest.India and the UK are finishing up intensive discussions for a free commerce settlement as either side are eager to conclude it on the earliest, he mentioned.
