US sanctions on two senior Chinese officers over alleged human rights abuses in Tibet had been unlawful and critically harmed Sino-US ties, the Chinese overseas ministry mentioned on Monday.

China rejects accusations that it has used harsh insurance policies to quell ethnic dissent and management spiritual actions within the mountainous Himalayan area of Tibet.

The feedback got here after the US Treasury division mentioned on Friday it imposed sanctions on Wu Yingjie, the chief of the ruling Communist Party in Tibet between 2016 and 2021, and Zhang Hongbo, a senior public safety official within the area.

Ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin mentioned the steps had been a gross interference in China’s inside affairs and a violation of primary norms of worldwide relations.

“We urge the U.S. side to immediately withdraw the so-called sanctions,” he mentioned.

They did critical harm to Sino-US relations, Wang mentioned, including that China would safeguard its legit rights and pursuits.

“The United States has no right to impose sanctions on other countries at every turn and is not qualified to play the world police,” Wang added.
