The report depends on a purported audio between Imran Khan and US lawmaker Maxine Moore Waters that leaked on social media.

In the purported audio, the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf chief was heard asking the US lawmaker to raise her voice in opposition to “human rights violations” in Pakistan, the report said.

The crackdown on PTI began days after protesters stormed the army headquarters (GHQ) in Rawalpindi and also torched a corps commander’s house in Lahore over Imran Khan’s dramatic arrest on May 9 in a corruption case.

Notably, Imran Khan’s arrest came a day after the army accused the ex-PM of levelling baseless allegations against a senior officer of the spy agency ISI. Khan had claimed that Faisal Naseer aka ‘Dirty Harry’ was behind the previous assassination attempts on him and he was also responsible for the murder of journalist Arshad Sharif.

In the clip, Imran Khan was heard briefing Maxine Moore Waters about the situation in Pakistan and requesting her to release a statement in his favour.

“I received three bullets in one assassination attempt. My government was removed by ex-army chief [General Qamar Javed Bajwa] because the military establishment is very powerful here. He conspired with people who are in power currently and toppled my government,” Khan was heard telling Maxime inside the purported audio clip.

“We merely need a assertion highlighting the [crackdown] and that will really help us. If any person akin to you Maxine speaks up it makes a great deal of waves,” he added.
