India’s ambassador to the United Nations TS Tirumurti on Thursday mentioned a navy battle between Russia and Ukraine might escalate into a serious disaster which has the potential to hazard peace and safety within the area.

Expressing concern over the rising tensions alongside the Ukraine-Russia border at a UN Security Council assembly on Ukraine, Tirumurti emphasised that a direct de-escalation must be a precedence so the scenario doesn’t take a flip for the more severe.

“The calls of the international community to give time to the recent initiatives undertaken by parties to diffuse tensions were not heeded to. The situation is in danger of spiraling into a major crisis. We call for immediate de-escalation and refraining from any further action that could contribute to a worsening of the situation,” he said.

Tirumurti called on all sides to exercise “utmost restraint” and maintain peace. He once again reiterated the need for peaceful settlement of the standoff and called on all concerned parties to exert greater efforts to come to a consensus through diplomatic channels.
