PCPIR challenge in Odisha runs into hassle, locals opposed over environmental, livelihood points

KENDRAPARA: In a significant jolt to the proposed Petroleum, Chemicals and Petrochemicals Investment Region (PCPIR) within the coastal district, numerous locals opposed the challenge over environmental and livelihood points on the public listening to held in Mahakalapada right here on Tuesday.

Organised by the Odisha State Pollution Control Board (OSPCB), the general public listening to was attended by native residents, landowners and officers of the Industrial Infrastructure Development Corporation (IDCO).
The residents stated the challenge will negatively impression their livelihood and the mangrove forests which act as a wall of defence in opposition to pure disasters like cyclones. 

Every 12 months, Kendrapara bears the brunt of cyclones, heavy rains and floods. If the challenge comes up, it’s going to result in a change within the water move regime thereby affecting the mangrove forests adversely, they claimed.
Environmentalist Kshitish Kumar Singh stated as per the environmental impression evaluation (EIA) report, the overall freshwater requirement for the proposed PCPIR can be 620 million litres per day (MLD) and the supply would be the Mahanadi River.

There isn’t any concrete knowledge within the EIA concerning the impression on the downflow of water within the river and sustainability of mangrove forests within the Mahanadi delta area, Singh stated including, that the report can be silent on the challenge’s impression on Bhitarkanika National Park because the move of contemporary water can be decreased drastically.

President of Odisha Masyajibi Forum Narayan Haldar stated the proposed challenge will have an effect on the livelihood of over 10,000 fishermen who eke out a dwelling by fishing within the rivers and creeks. Since the administration will hand over fertile agricultural lands for the challenge, the livelihood of farmers too can be hit.

However, the Additional District Magistrate (ADM) of Kendrapara Durga Prasad Moharana stated such a big petrochemical challenge will generate round 4 lakh direct and oblique jobs since it’s going to entice an enormous variety of small and medium-sized industries. Both expert and unskilled youths of the area can be benefitted from the challenge. At least 7,000 acres of land in 51 villages of Mahakalapada and 12 of Marsaghai can be acquired for the challenge within the district.
