NISER scientists uncover hydrogen bonding with carbon in proteins

BHUBANESWAR: In a path-breaking discovery, a gaggle of scientists has decoded the protein construction in bio-molecules and claimed to have discovered the primary proof for hydrogen bonds with carbon atoms in proteins.The four-member crew led by an Odia scientist Himansu Sekhar Biswal found that carbon atoms can settle for hydrogen bonding. The discovery will assist design new medicine and guarantee their focused supply.

Hydrogen bonds (H-bonds) is a century-old idea which finds place in virtually all of the branches of pure and pharmaceutical sciences since their inception in 1912.The contributions of H-bonds in several organic processes, molecular recognition and supplies science have been effectively accepted. Biswal stated the carbon-hydrogen bonding will help proteins bind their molecules and the cumulative impact could possibly be giant sufficient to manage the construction and features of proteins. “It will encourage researchers involved in drug inventions to explore the influence of the hydrogen bonding with carbon,” he added. The researchers crew searched the protein knowledge financial institution (PDB) for non-covalent bonding involving tetravalent carbons connected to electropositive parts like arsenic by utilizing home-written code. 

They discovered 1,051 such non-covalent interactions in 918 totally different molecular crystals in current PDB, out of which 843 crystal buildings have carbon-hydrogen bond interactions. “Some of the earlier studies show that carbon can donate hydrogen bonding. We found the carbon atoms are the hydrogen bond acceptors here. The study will be useful for structural biologists in explaining molecule binding through carbon atoms and for synthetic chemists to design carbon-hydrogen activation,” stated Akshay Kumar Sahu, one other researcher.

The research titled ‘Carbon-Centered Hydrogen Bonds in Proteins’ has been printed within the latest problem of Journal of Chemical Information and Modeling (JCIM), a peer-reviewed scientific journal printed by the American Chemical Society. Other researchers included Juhi Dutta and Abhijeet S Bhadauria.
