Nine-month-old succumbs after being branded with scorching iron as therapy for fever

UMERKOTE: In a surprising incident, a nine-month-old child of Jodapara village in Raighar block died after being allegedly branded with scorching iron rod as a therapy for chilly and fever. According to sources, Sukdev Gond’s baby Rupesh was affected by fever, chilly and cough. On getting data, Asha didi of the village Sahanti Gond rushed to Sukdev’s home on Tuesday and suggested taking the kid to a hospital . However, Sukdev and his household denied and referred to as a quack from Jodogonga space on Wednesday for therapy. The baby was then branded 20 instances with scorching iron because the marks on physique advised, sources added.

As the kid’s well being worsened,  Asha didi referred to as an ambulance and shifted the child boy to Hatbhorondi CHC and received him admitted there. However, after a day of therapy because the baby was bettering, the mother and father defied the physician and took Rupesh again dwelling. Dr Dasarath Nag, who was treating the kid, instantly filed a criticism with Kundei police station in regards to the baby being forcefully taken dwelling with out his permission. Even after a day, Asha Sahanti saved persuading the mother and father to take the kid to the hospital however Sukdev didn’t pay heed and continued with quack therapy. The baby died late night time on Friday.  

Contacted, CDMO Nabarangpur Kali Prassd Behera admitted  the dying of the kid and  scorching iron rod branding. He stated a criticism has been  lodged in Kundei police station. “The administration is planning to increase awareness programmes specially in tribal dominated villages of the district,” he knowledgeable.
Sukanti Gond, the sister of the deceased baby, corroborated that Rupesh was handled by a quack with scorching iron rod and scorching cashew nut branding.

About a month in the past, a three-year-old baby of Likhmapada village in Raighar block was severely injured after being branded by iron rod and died whereas present process therapy in hospital. Locals say such incidents are occurring at frequent intervals because of lack of knowledge.  A number of years in the past, then District Collector of Nabarangpur district, Rashmita Panda, was awarded by the State authorities for efficient implementation of consciousness programmes in opposition to branded iron rod therapy. However, with recurrence of such incidents now, the administration’s position in creating consciousness within the district has come below scanner.
