Mumbai police arrest Odisha man for creating pretend social media profiles and blackmailing youths

BHUBANESHWAR: Mumbai Police arrested a youth from Bhubaneswar for allegedly creating pretend Facebook and Instagram accounts in women’ names and blackmailing customers after acquiring their obscene footage, police stated on Thursday.

The accused Debasis Kirtonia was staying in Sampur below Bharatpur coverage limits. On receiving complaints towards the pretend social media accounts, Mumbai Police had launched an investigation into the matter and had registered a case on this connection below the Information Technology Act.

“Mumbai Police have taken Kirtonia on transit remand after producing him in a court in Bhubaneswar on Wednesday,” stated an officer of Bharatpur police station.

The accused was reportedly befriending the youths, gaining their confidence and asking them to share their non-public pictures. Kirtonia was then blackmailing the customers for cash and was threatening to make their pictures viral on social media if they didn’t conform to his calls for.

Commissionerate Police had just lately cautioned the residents to stay alert of cybercriminals who’re concentrating on the unsuspecting social media customers.

“An unknown woman might introduce herself to you on Facebook and WhatsApp and encourage you to make private video calls. However, be cautious they will record your video call and blackmail you to deposit the money in their accounts,” stated Cuttack DCP’s official Twitter deal with. This is a brand new tactic of cybercriminals, watch out, it added.
