Jharkhand decides to keep CBI out, becomes the 7th state to

1 min read

A day after Kerala put up a no-entry board for the CBI, Jharkhand on Thursday joined the league of non-BJP states revoking “general consent” for the country’s premier investigating agency to conduct any new probe within its boundaries without prior permission. Jharkhand is the seventh state where the CBI now requires either a court directive or the government’s consent to open an investigation. The barrier to entry does not apply to any investigation that is underway.
Besides Kerala and Jharkhand, the states that have invoked the Delhi Special Police Establishment Act, 1946, to prevent the CBI from starting a suo motu investigation into any case within their jurisdiction are Bengal, Chhattisgarh, Rajasthan, Mizoram and Maharashtra. Andhra Pradesh was part of the list before the Jaganmohan Reddy government restored general consent to the CBI in mid-June last year. Congress termed the notification issued by the state “a timely intervention to save the sanctity of constitutional bodies”.
CM Hemant Soren had in the past accused the Centre of unleashing the CBI on various state governments out of “vendetta”.
