Heavy rains lash Kerala; water stage rises in lots of dams

KOCHI: The water stage in lots of dams throughout Kerala confirmed a rising pattern on Sunday at the same time as cyclone Tauktae moved away from the state’s coast after wreaking havoc.

India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued orange alerts –a warning indicating heavy to very heavy rain– on Sunday in three districts-Ernakulam, Idukki and Malappuram.

The catchment areas of many dams within the central Kerala districts have reported heavy rains, prompting the authorities to sound alert warnings earlier than upping their shutters.

The Thrissur district administration stated spillway shutters of the Peringalkuthu dam can be opened if the water stage crosses the permitted restrict of 419.41 metres.

In an announcement, the administration has urged the individuals residing on the banks of Chalakudy river to be cautious.

Shutters of Malankara dam in Idukki district can be opened on Sunday, because the water stage has elevated, the district authorities stated.

The administration has directed these individuals residing on the banks of Thodupuzha river, Muvattupuzha river and their tributaries to be cautious.

In the coastal areas, excessive tidal waves continued to wreak havoc.

Hundreds of households residing in coastal areas and low mendacity areas of the state have been shifted to reduction camps.

Indian Navy on Sunday deployed its diving and fast response groups within the coastal village of Chellanam in Ernakulam district, which was closely hit by tidal waves.

The groups, braving harsh climate situations, undertook rescue and rehabilitation of people that acquired trapped in homes.

They have been shifted to a reduction camp at St Mary’s High School in Chellanam, a Navy official has stated.

Besides Chellanam in Ernakulam district, tough sea and excessive tidal waves had wreaked havoc in Kaipamangalam, Chavakkad and Kodungallur in Thrissur, Pallithura in Thiruvananthapuram, Thrikkannapuzha in Alappuzha and Beypore and Koyilandy in Kozhikode districts.

Hundreds of homes have been broken in coastal belts throughout the state as sea water seeped in following excessive waves.

According to the state authorities, at the very least 9 districts have been severely affected by the ocean incursion.

Numerous individuals have been shifted to reduction camps in numerous districts, organized in adherence to COVID-19 protocols.
