Gang stealing cellular tower batteries busted in Odisha’s Ganjam, siblings amongst 4 arrested

BERHAMPUR: Aska police busted a gang concerned in stealing batteries from cellular towers in Ganjam’s Bhanjanagar sub-division and arrested 4 individuals on this connection on Sunday evening.

The arrested are Aditya Behera (25) and his brother Satya Narayan Behera (27) of Jhadabandha village moreover receivers of the stolen batteries Lipun Nayak of Hinjili and Ram Dasgupta of Berhampur. Batteries price round Rs 40 lakh have been recovered from their possession.

Aska IIC Prashant Kumar Sahu mentioned that over a dozen instances of battery theft have been reported in Bhanjanagar, Aska, Hinjili, Kabisuryanagar and Purusottampur police stations within the final three months. Police first apprehended Aditya who was working for a cellular service supplier and had experience in working the towers. During interrogation, he confessed to his crime. A cellular tower has 24 batteries every costing round Rs 40,000.

The IIC mentioned that benefiting from the absence of CCTV cameras and safety guards on the cellular towers, Aditya stole the batteries with assist of his brother Satya.

After stealing the batteries from numerous places, the duo bought these to scrap sellers at Hinjili and Berhampur. Basing on the confession of the siblings, police raided the scrap godowns of Lipun at Hinjili and Ram at Berhampur. During search, 253 batteries have been recovered from the 2 scrap sellers. The accused have been produced in courtroom on Monday. Further investigation is underway.
