KALPETTA: The energy era by way of the photo voltaic panels of Banasura Sagar dam in Wayanad is actually electrifying. A complete of 10,72,768.1 kW energy has been generated from the floating photo voltaic panels of the dam until December 2020. Another 99,210 kW was produced from the roof-top panels.

First, the rooftop photo voltaic panel was commissioned in 2016 with a capability of 440 kW. Three years later, floating panels have been arrange with a capability of 10 kW. Later, it was enhanced to 500 kW. “A complete of 17 hole concrete blocks of photo voltaic panels have been floating within the water.

Three of them are of 23-m size and 15-m breadth. Other blocks are barely small,” stated P Manoharan, assistant govt engineer (AEE) KSEB Thariyod Dam Safety sub-division. The highest amount of solar energy produced from Banasura was on February 17, 2017 — 2,493 kW.

Floating photo voltaic panels thought up by college students The concept of floating the photo voltaic station was recommended by two BTech college students from Wayanad — Ayaj Thomas and V M Sudheen – to KSEB in 2015. The concept was the fruit of brainstorming on eco-friendly energy era strategies. The generated energy is equipped to the KSEB predominant grid at 33 KV sub-station in Padinjarathara. A complete of I9.25 crore was the challenge value, of which I7 crore was from the state’s Innovation Fund and the remaining availed by way of Nabard mortgage.
