Annual Census Of Dolphin Begins In Chilika | OTV News

Bhubaneswar: The annual headcount train of dolphins inhabiting within the backwaters of Chilika Lake started on Sunday.
Official sources stated, 18 groups comprising 109 officers from forest division, Chilika Development Authority (CDA), WWF, Motor Boat Association, representatives of a number of NGOs and college students of Odisha University of Agriculture & Technology (OUAT) have been engaged for the enumeration of Irrawaddy dolphins at Chilika, Asia’s largest brackish water lagoon.
The groups started the annual census at 6 am and the train continued until 12 pm. The groups carried out the enumeration utilizing GPS units, binoculars, subtle cameras and rangefinder.
“The annual survey was conducted by parallel line and transact survey methods. While 10 teams of experts conducted the counting in Balugaon area, the remaining 8 teams were engaged for the counting in Satapada area,” knowledgeable Satapada Ranger Manash Mahapatra.
As many as 146 dolphins had been sighted in Chilika through the annual census in 2020. While 113 dolphins had been sighted in 2019, 162 had been noticed in 2018 and 123 in 2017, stated stories.
Earlier in January this yr, the forest officers had noticed 12,04,351, to be precise, migratory birds from throughout 111 species through the annual chook census.
