Umpire hit on face by ball from drag flick in hockey World Cup match

In a weird incident, German umpire Ben Goentgen was hit on the face off a penalty nook strike within the FIH Men’s World Cup quarterfinal match between Netherlands and South Korea on Wednesday.

Goentgen was instantly taken off the sphere for medical consideration.

The incident occurred within the twenty eighth minute when South Korean Jang Jonghyun’s stinging drag flick acquired deflected from a Netherlands participant’s stick and struck the face of Goentgen, who was standing a couple of meters away from the aim publish.

Goentgen fell down in ache whereas his co-umpire Gareth Greenfield of New Zealand and medical workers of the match organisers rushed to assist him.

The injured umpire held his face with one hand and rushed out of the sphere together with the medical workers.

He was later changed by the reserve umpire of the match, Raghu Prasad of India.
