India batting coach Vikram Rathour rued the crew’s batting towards England, saying he was anticipating considered one of them to play an enormous knock within the second innings of the rescheduled fifth Test at Edgbaston in Birmingham.

The guests added 245 runs of their second innings, with Cheteshwar Pujara and Rishabh Pant scoring 66 and 57 respectively. India set the 378-run goal for England.

“I’ll agree we had a pretty ordinary day as far as batting is concerned,” Rathour stated within the press convention.

“We were ahead in the game. We were in a position where we could have batted them out of the game. Unfortunately, it didn’t happen. A lot of them got starts but really couldn’t convert those starts. We were expecting one of them to play a big knock and have a big partnership, but unfortunately, it didn’t happen.”

In reply, England took the aggressive route with openers Alex Lees and Zak Crawley placing up a 107-run opening partnership. Lees registered a fifty, whereas Crawley fell brief by 4 runs as India stand-in captain Jaspit Bumrah bowled him.

Bumrah struck for a second time and eliminated Ollie Pope for a three-ball duck. However, England recovered very quickly as former captain Joe Root and Jonny Bairstow noticed off Day 4 with a strong unbeaten 150-run partnership for the fourth wicket.

When requested about India’s bowling method, Rathour stated: “We need to bowl better in better areas. A couple of dropped chances so that made a difference. So that’s it.”

England are on 259 for the lack of three wickets at stumps. The hosts want 119 runs to win the fifth Test and sq. the sequence 2-2, with Root and Bairstow batting on 76 and 72 respectively.
