By India Today Web Desk: Sydney Thunder has roped in Afghanistan quick bowler Fazalhaq Farooqi for the upcoming version of the Big Bash League (BBL).

The Thunder picked the left-arm pacer after England’s David Willey pulled out of the event final week. Andrew Gilchrist, the top of the Thunder, heaped reward on Farooqi for performing his coronary heart out within the Asia Cup and the T20 World Cup 2022 on Australian soil.

“Fazalhaq Farooqi is an emerging talent. He joins Thunder in great form after playing exceptional cricket in the World T20 Cup and the Asia Cup tournament,” Gilchrist was quoted as saying.

“While it was very disappointing to have lost David Willey, it has opened the door for Farooqi to further enhance his reputation and growing status in world cricket,” he stated.

In the T20 World Cup, the 22-year-old Farooqi played three matches against Australia, Sri Lanka and England and picked up three wickets.

In all T20s, Farooqi has picked up 35 wickets from 33 matches at an economy rate of 6.53. He also plied his trade for the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in the 2022 edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL).

Farooqi became one of the many Afghan cricketers, including Rashid Khan, Mujeeb Ur Rahman and Mohammad Nabi, to take part in the BBL.

“Afghanistan has loved an incredible illustration within the BBL over time. Rashid Khan has been embraced by Adelaide Strikers followers as a real famous person and adopted South Australian, whereas others, together with Zahir Khan, Noor Ahmad and Mohammad Nabi (Renegades), Mujeeb Ur Rahman (Heat) and Qais Ahmad (Stars) have made their marks.

“We fully expect Fazalhaq will only further enhance the growing reputation of cricketers from Afghanistan for being fearless cricketers and extraordinary entertainers,” Gilchrist added.

The Thunder are scheduled to begin their marketing campaign on Tuesday, December 13 with their match towards Melbourne Stars on the Manuka Oval in Canberra.
