Idukki Landslide: 54 dead, 16 still missing in Kerala landslide

Idukki: The death toll due to landslides in Idukki district of Kerala has risen to 54 on Wednesday. The bodies of two more people were found on Wednesday. Authorities in Idukki said 16 people are still missing since the accident. NDRF, firefighters and police department personnel are searching for missing people near Rajamala. These people have been missing since August 7. Heavy rains in many parts of Kerala have led to flooding in low-lying areas of the state.

At the same time, the 151-year-old St. Paul CSI Church was demolished after the dam broke down in Chungam Kuruveli Padasekharam area of ​​Alappuzha district. The church was waterlogged as it was situated amidst paddy fields. That is why it collapsed after the dam broke. No casualties have been reported in this incident. Authorities had already warned of dam breakdown. Local residents of the area had moved to safer places from the area.

On Friday, heavy rains triggered a landslide at Rajamalai in Idukki district. During this time 15 people were safely evacuated and 60 people were buried under the debris. In this landslide-hit mountainous region, most of the T-Estates have workers. The landslide incident is said to have occurred in the morning when a large piece of earth fell from the mountains on the queued houses, killing the people sleeping in the houses. Most of the people working in the tea estate were from the neighboring state of Tamil Nadu.
