New Delhi, Agencies. The Union Government has banned the export of all onion varieties with immediate effect. Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) issued notification in this regard on Monday. It states that exports of all varieties of onions are prohibited with immediate effect. The decision is aimed at increasing availability of onions in the domestic market and keeping prices under control.

The notification also states that the provisions of arrangements under the Transitional Arrangement will not come under its purview. Let us tell you that DGFT is a unit dealing with issues related to import and export, which works under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry. Onions from India are exported to Bangladesh, Malaysia, UAE and Sri Lanka. It is said that since August 8, prices of onions have been gradually increasing in the wholesale markets.
