‘Which holy river of this nation..’: DMK MP’s poem seeks to seize agony of ladies in Manipur

CHENNAI: At a time when the complete of India is outraged by the video of two girls in Manipur being paraded bare by a mob and tortured, DMK MP Thamizhachi Thangapandian has Tweeted a poem penned by her in Tamil, Poo Nagam to seize the violence perpetrated in opposition to girls. 

The poem, which is a lament that echoes the agony and anger of ladies in every single place, begins with the traces, “Which holy river of this country / Could wash the stains of flesh clean from our rapes?”

Which holy river of this nation
Could wash the stains of flesh clear from our rapes?
Which Gods of this nation had paid heed
When we had been disrobed?
Which boards of this nation
Resonated the grief of our cries?
Which doorways of this…

The Lok Sabha MP has tweeted the poem on July 21, 2023.

Prabhu Chawla in his column in The New Indian Express, revealed on Sunday, has cited the primary traces of the poem as a prelude to his piece.

Poo Naagam, the poet explains, “is a mythological creature – a tiny snake that lives in flowers and is extremely venomous.”

The poem concludes on a convincing observe, “We will bloom within the flowers of this nation, As Thousand Neelis! (Neeli is a mythological lady character who exacted revenge on those that wronged her) When it’s time, The period of the Poo Naagam, Wouldn’t simply avenge those who wreaked havoc on us, But additionally, who  remained, as Silent Witnesses !

On July 19, a video emerged that confirmed two Kuki girls in Manipur being paraded bare by a mob from the opposite facet. The incident, which occurred in Manipur’s Kangpokpi district, came about on May 4, a day after the violence erupted between the 2 communities.

More than 160 folks have misplaced their lives and several other have been injured since ethnic violence broke out in Manipur on May 3, when a ‘Tribal Solidarity March’ was organised within the hill districts to protest in opposition to the Meitei group’s demand for Scheduled Tribe (ST) standing.
