United Democratic Party, a part of ruling alliance in Meghalaya, to not assist Uniform Civil Code

SHILLONG: The United Democratic Party (UDP), a serious ally of the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance authorities on Thursday declined to assist the proposed Uniform Civil Code within the absence of the draft proposal from the Government of India.

“Since there is no clarity on the matter, the party is disinclined to support the proposed implementation of the Uniform Civil Code,” get together normal secretary Jemino Mawthoh mentioned, in a letter despatched to the Law Commission on Thursday.

“In light of the absence of the draft proposal from the Government of India, we are left in a position that deprives us from sharing our views at this juncture,” he mentioned.

Earlier ruling National People’s Party supremo and chief minister Conrad Okay Sangma had introduced his get together’s opposition to the UCC.

The UCC refers to a standard set of legal guidelines on marriage, divorce, and inheritance that will be relevant to all Indian residents irrespective of faith, tribe, or different native customs.

The Law Commission had on June 14 initiated a recent session course of on UCC by in search of views from stakeholders, together with public and recognised spiritual organisations, on the politically delicate challenge.
