UGC urges Governors, CMs to make textbooks obtainable in native languages

NEW DELHI: The University Grants Commission (UGC) Chairperson, Prof. M Jagadesh Kumar, has written to Governors and chief state ministers expressing concern that the textbooks and examine supplies are unavailable in native languages for a lot of larger schooling programs.
He urged them to provide textbooks of their mom tongue by means of writing or translation for the topics of which textbooks should not obtainable within the native language.

“Teaching through Indian languages is a key area of focus of the National Education Policy 2020. The policy envisages the importance of teaching and teaching materials in the mother tongue,” he stated.
He stated it’s heartening to notice that textbooks within the mom tongue are promoted and utilized by larger schooling establishments in India.
Teaching can be being imparted within the mom tongue in lots of school and college undergraduate programmes in social sciences, commerce, and so on.
This has benefited college students from all strata of our society, notably the deprived sections and people residing in rural and distant areas, he stated.
“But it is also a matter of concern that the textbooks and study materials are unavailable in local languages for many of the courses in higher education, science, commerce and professional courses,” he stated.
He stated that the promotion of writing or translation of textbooks and the instructing course of in undergraduate and postgraduate ranges in larger schooling by means of the mom tongue could have larger leads to improved GER from 27 per cent to 50 per cent by 2035, elevated entry to disadvantageous social teams, and higher attain.
Prof Kumar stated they’d constituted an apex committee of vice-chancellors from totally different states to take the duty ahead.
