UCC concern: BJP seeks to divide folks, unfold hatred, says Congress

NEW DELHI: The Congress on Friday attacked the BJP on the Uniform Civil Code concern, alleging that it seeks to divide folks and unfold hatred, days after Prime Minister Narendra Modi made a powerful pitch for bringing the widespread code.

On Tuesday, Modi in Bhopal had made a powerful pitch for UCC and mentioned Muslims are being instigated over the delicate concern.

UCC pertains to a typical regulation pertaining to marriage, divorce, inheritance, upkeep and succession of property for all residents.

This isn’t a UCC, however a “DCC – Dividing Civil Code” that seeks to divide the nation’s politics, Congress spokesperson Meem Afzal mentioned and added that the “UCC is not the agenda, rather the agenda is to divide the people of the country”.

“The issue is to divide politics and people and spread hatred among them. Even the prime minister is naming a particular section of people, whereas this issue is not of one section. This is an issue of every section, every religion and every language. If you are doing some work, it should be acceptable to all,” he mentioned.

Congress spokesperson Manish Tewari additionally mentioned in line with his understanding of the regulation, “review of personal laws means a review of existing personal laws” and “the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) is not law as yet”.

“To put UCC under the same rubric of existing laws may be or is a bit of a stretch,” he mentioned.
