Rains in Punjab depart wheat growers apprehensive

CHANDIGARH/HOSHIRAPUR: Rains lashed many components of Punjab on Saturday, leaving farmers apprehensive as showers accompanied by high-velocity winds flattened the wheat crop at some locations within the state. 

With rains lashing many locations in Punjab, wheat growers have been apprehensive about their standing crops as showers at this stage would hit the yield.

In Hoshiarpur, high-velocity winds and rain broken standing wheat crops in some components of the district. Hoshiarpur Chief Agriculture Officer Gurdev Singh stated the rain and gusty winds had precipitated much less harm to crops within the district as in comparison with different districts of the state.

Strong winds flattened standing wheat crops at about 150 hectares of land within the Mukerian, Tanda and Sham Chaurasi areas of this district.

The precise loss to the standing crop was being assessed, stated Gurdev Singh.

In Muktsar additionally, rains and high-velocity winds flattened the wheat crop in some locations.

The farm specialists had earlier suggested farmers to not irrigate wheat crops to keep away from losses because of lodging due to the rains and powerful winds.

Punjab this season introduced 34.90 lakh hectares of space underneath wheat crop with a projected output of 170 lakh metric tonnes.

In the final 24 hours, locations together with Ludhiana witnessed 13.8 mm of rainfall, 25.6 mm in Patiala, 6.6 mm in Pathankot, 5.8 mm in Bathinda, 11 mm in SBS Nagar, in accordance with a report of the MeT division.
