Parliament passes Maritime Anti-Piracy Bill

NEW DELHI: Parliament on Wednesday handed the Maritime Anti-Piracy Bill, which offers for stringent punishment to these convicted of such crimes.

The Rajya Sabha on Wednesday handed by voice vote the Maritime Anti-Piracy Bill-2022 which was moved for consideration and passage by External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar.

The invoice was handed by the Lok Sabha on Monday.

In the invoice, the federal government has added provisions for loss of life penalty and life imprisonment for these convicted of maritime piracy.

Replying to a debate on the invoice, Jaishankar mentioned it’s going to assist the nation in having worldwide cooperation to take care of piracy.

He additionally informed the House, “We will have jurisdiction on foreign ships (which would indulge in piracy).”

About the members’ recommendations about having customary working procedures (SOP) for have higher enforcement, he said that the suggestion is effectively taken as it could assist in its enforcement.

He appreciated the members’ views that authorised individuals — armed forces coping with piracy — have to be given immunity.
