Mumbai: CBI arrests GST superintendent in Rs 10 lakh bribery case

NEW DELHI: The CBI has arrested a superintendent of GST in Mumbai for allegedly demanding a bribe of Rs 10 lakh from a businessman, officers mentioned Monday.

The company acted on a criticism from scrap dealer Zakir Hussain Shah in Mumbai who had alleged that GST Superintendent B Someshwar Rao had demanded Rs 20 lakh from him to settle legal responsibility of Rs 1.25 crore, they mentioned.

The complainant alleged that Rao and one other official had threatened to arrest him in case he didn’t make the fee to them, the officers mentioned, including that the accused allegedly refused to simply accept further paperwork that chartered accountant of the vendor wished to submit.

According to CBI, Shah then pleaded with Rao to scale back the bribe quantity as he didn’t have the capability to pay such a hefty quantity.

Rao allegedly lowered the bribe to Rs 9 lakh however later elevated it to Rs 10 lakh for delay in fee.

After receiving the criticism, the CBI did a discreet verification of the allegation which prima facie gave the impression to be true, the officers mentioned.

The company later arrested Rao who has been despatched to police custody by a particular court docket in Mumbai, they mentioned.
