Jammu Municipal Corporation: Congress boycotts election to posts of mayor, deputy mayor

JAMMU: The Congress on Friday boycotted the election to the posts of mayor and deputy mayor of the Jammu Municipal Corporation (JMC) in protest in opposition to the “open ballot” voting course of.

Corporator Rajinder Sharma of the BJP has polled 57 votes, whereas Congress candidate Dwarka Nath Choudhary obtained one vote, sources stated.

The BJP and the Congress have been in a straight contest for the posts of mayor and deputy mayor.

The Congress corporators boycotted the election in protest in opposition to the change of process of voting from secret poll to open poll.

“The change of procedure from secret voting to open ballot was undemocratic. It was not done in the past. In protest against this, our corporators have boycott the polling,” chief spokesperson of J&Okay Congress Ravinder Sharma advised PTI.

“Although we did not have the majority, we have put our candidates for the contest. But this undemocratic step has forced us to boycott it,” he stated.

The BJP maintained that it had majority and its mayoral candidate received the election with a thumping majority.

“The election for the post of mayor has taken place. A total of 59 votes were polled — 57 went to BJP candidate Rajinder Sharma, one vote was declared invalid and one vote went to the Congress candidate,” BJP corporator Baldev Singh Billoria advised reporters right here.

He stated the election to the publish of deputy mayor began subsequently.

The posts fell vacant final month following the resignation of incumbent mayor Chander Mohan Gupta and his deputy Purnima Sharma, each from the BJP, to deal with strengthening the social gathering forward of the meeting elections scheduled to happen after the conclusion of ongoing particular abstract revision of electoral rolls.
