Alam, who had joined Akali Dal after retirement, was fielded from Malerkotla within the 2012 elections. But confronted with criticism over his alleged methods of concentrating on Sikh youth within the period of militancy, Akali Dal ultimately determined to drop him and discipline his spouse Farzana from Malerkotla. Farzana defeated Congress candidate Razia Sultana, spouse of 1985-batch IPS officer Mohammad Mustafa who retired in February this yr, in 2012 elections, in an election which was primarily a proxy contest between Alam and Mustafa. Sultana who received from Malerkotla in 2017 is at the moment a minister in Congress authorities led by Chief Minister Amarinder Singh.

Alam was alleged to have created “Alam Sena”, a drive to counter terrorism, which didn’t have any authorized backing and was topic to sharp criticism from radical Sikh organisations and human rights activists for alleged human rights violations and atrocities in Punjab. In June 2016, a mob attacked the home of Alam, following an incident of desecration of Quran within the city when Farzana was sitting Akali legislator at the moment.
