Food for thought: 13L beneficiaries faraway from security internet in Punjab

CHANDIGARH:  The Punjab authorities has struck off the names of 13 lakh eligible beneficiaries underneath the National Food Security Act (NFSA) scheme, because the state had 1.57 crore beneficiaries who get meals grain (wheat) underneath this scheme. 

However, as per norms arrange by the Centre, the beneficiaries mustn’t quantity greater than 1.41 crore, which meant there have been 16 lakh extra beneficiaries who benefited underneath the NFSA. Sources mentioned there are 40.68 lakh ration card holders within the state who get 5 kg of wheat per particular person within the household, each month at a nominal price of Rs 2 per kg. The district administrations are conducting a re-verification train in search of the ineligible beneficiaries.

So far 38.50 lakh ration card holders have been screened or verified, which is 97 % of the entire ration card holders. Of them, 3.36 lakh playing cards have  been canceled, which is 13 lakh ineligible beneficiaries. The district administrations began the survey to confirm the ration playing cards after the Centre mounted the allocation of the state underneath NFSA to 2.12 lakh tonne of wheat in opposition to the present 2.36 lakh tonne. 

The state authorities was instructed that the Centre wouldn’t reimburse meals grain given to 16 lakh extra beneficiaries. If the state authorities wished to offer such a amount of the meals grain, then it has to 
pay from its personal pocket as Rs 300 crore was concerned in supplying grain to those beneficiaries. The authorities spends Rs 100 each month on every beneficiary to offer subsidised wheat, mentioned sources.
