The Union Ministry of Home & Affairs has amended its July 3, 2014 notification to increase the jurisdiction of Border Security Forces (BSF) from current 15 km to 50 km contained in the worldwide border in Assam, West Bengal and Punjab which share borders with Bangladesh and Pakistan respectively.
The BSF was raised in December 1965 as a specialised pressure to protect India’s worldwide border.
The resolution was taken within the wake of an rising variety of circumstances of cattle and drug smuggling and Fake Indian Currency Notes (FICN) racket alongside the worldwide borders. Drug and arms smuggling has emerged as a brand new problem in Punjab whereas Assam and West Bengal are the hotbeds of cattle smuggling, FICN, and unlawful Bangladeshi and Rohingya migration.
The ministry, empowered beneath Section 139 of the Border Security Force Act 1968 to revise operational areas of BSF, has stated that it’ll enhance the operational effectivity of the BSF to crack down on smuggling rackets.
As per the gazette notification issued on Monday, BSF will now have the ability to hold search, seizure and arrest inside 50 km from the borders in these states beneath Acts specifically Criminal Procedure Code, Passport Act, NDPS Act and Customs Act. BSF has been given comparable energy of search and arrest in different North-Eastern states specifically Mizoram, Tripura, Manipur, Nagaland and Meghalaya moreover UTs of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh.
On the opposite hand, the jurisdiction of BSF in Gujarat has been lowered from 80 km to 50 km and no change has been made in Rajasthan the place BSF continues to protect 50 km radius space.
The primary concept was to deliver uniformity within the space of operation in states sharing worldwide borders. The huge swathe of Gujarat sharing the worldwide border is the Rann of Kutch, which is uninhabited, therefore such a big operational space is just not required.
But as normal, Punjab and West Bengal dominated by the Congress and Trinamool Congress (TMC) have began protesting the choice as an assault on federalism and interference via Central companies.

I urge the Union Home Minister to immediately roll back this irrational decision,” Punjab Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi tweeted.
