Anand Mohan incident: Attorney General declines consent for contempt proceedings towards 13 folks

NEW DELHI: Attorney General Okay Okay Venugopal has declined consent for initiating contempt proceedings towards 13 folks, together with jail and police officers, over controversial politician Anand Mohan being allegedly allowed to go to his residence in Patna after his manufacturing earlier than a trial courtroom there.

Venugopal mentioned the lawyer common’s contempt jurisdiction is restricted to dealing solely with cases of felony contempt of the Supreme Court of India.

Mohan is serving a life sentence for the homicide of IAS officer G Krishnaiah in 1994.

Venugopal’s resolution got here on a letter by advocate Brajesh Singh who had sought initiation of contempt proceedings towards 13 folks for allegedly intentionally interfering in and obstructing the administration of justice for allegedly permitting Mohan to roam out of the Saharsa jail for about 47 hours.

The lawyer had quoted media reviews and sought motion towards 13 folks together with police and jail officers.

“I have examined your request for consent to initiate proceedings for criminal contempt of the Supreme Court of India against 13 named persons in connection with the production of Mr Anand Mohan before the trial court of Patna. Under section 15 of the Contempt of Courts Act, 1971, the Attorney General’s contempt jurisdiction is limited to dealing with instances of criminal contempt of the Supreme Court of India. The facts narrated by you do not in any manner amount to criminal contempt of the Supreme Court of India. I accordingly decline consent,” the highest regulation officer mentioned in his letter.

Six police personnel had been suspended in reference to the incident involving a controversial politician.
