President Donald Trump has directly addressed the New York City mayoral election, focusing his criticism on Zohran Mamdani, a democratic socialist candidate. Trump has threatened to significantly reduce federal funding to the city if Mamdani is elected mayor, raising concerns about the city’s financial future.
In a public post on Truth Social, Trump labeled Mamdani a “Communist” and warned of a “complete and total disaster” for New York City under his leadership. He articulated his stance by saying, “If Communist Candidate Zohran Mamdani wins the Election for Mayor of New York City, it is highly unlikely that I will be contributing Federal Funds, other than the very minimum as required.” Trump argued that the city’s success is incompatible with communist ideology.
The former President further suggested that his administration would be obligated to avoid sending federal funds to a city led by Mamdani, calling it a poor investment. He also unexpectedly advocated for the election of former Governor Andrew Cuomo, presenting him as a more viable option than Mamdani, despite past political friction. Trump even implied that voting for Republican Curtis Sliwa would indirectly benefit Mamdani.
Zohran Mamdani, a 34-year-old New York State Assembly member, is an immigrant who has lived in the city for most of his life. He is a leading contender in the mayoral race, with recent polls showing him ahead of his rivals.
Following Trump’s remarks and endorsement of Cuomo, Mamdani responded with a sarcastic social media message, acknowledging Cuomo’s perceived “win.” This exchange underscores the intense political climate surrounding the election, with national figures weighing in and the potential for substantial financial implications for New York City.
