The US government is giving reasons for the tariffs placed on India. Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt stated that former President Donald Trump implemented the tariffs in an effort to end the Russia-Ukraine conflict. According to her, Trump’s objective is to stop the ongoing conflict between the two countries.
The United States originally put a 25% tariff on India. Later, an extra 25% was added, which doubled the amount. Currently, India is being charged a 50% tariff by the United States.
Press Secretary Leavitt said that the former President had put enormous pressure on people to stop the Russia-Ukraine war, including the additional tariff on India and other actions. Leavitt stated that Trump has always wanted to resolve the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
The possibility of a trilateral meeting was also discussed. Leavitt said that the former President wanted the conflict to end quickly. Trump met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy at the White House. He asked Zelenskyy to negotiate with Putin to end the conflict. The meeting included the NATO Secretary General and all the European leaders who agreed that Trump had been making a great effort. She said that after the meeting, the President hoped that the two leaders would meet and discuss ending the war.
Within 48 hours of his meeting with Putin, European leaders were able to meet at the White House because of Trump’s efforts to establish peace. She said that at the White House, the President shared his views on a peace agreement with all of the European leaders, and they all thought Trump was doing a great job.
Leavitt restated that if Trump had been President at the time, the war between Russia and Ukraine would not have started. She said that the leaders of both countries are thankful to Trump for attempting to broker a peace agreement, because the previous government had not, and this was even acknowledged by Russian President Vladimir Putin.
