US Vice President JD Vance recently voiced his personal hope that his wife, Usha, might one day convert to Christianity from her Hindu faith. Speaking at a Turning Point USA rally, Vance candidly discussed his beliefs and his approach to interfaith marriage. He articulated his desire for his wife to embrace the Christian gospel, but stressed that he fully supports her autonomy, saying, “God says everybody has free will, and so that doesn’t cause a problem for me.” Vance shared that he and Usha, who were both agnostic or atheist when they first met at Yale, have chosen to raise their children within the Christian tradition. He emphasized the critical role of communication in managing religious diversity within a partnership. Vance himself has a complex faith history, having returned to Christianity and later converting to Catholicism. He clarified his comments on X, stating that his wife has no plans to convert and reaffirming his dedication to their marriage, regardless of their differing religious beliefs.
