Angela Rayner, the UK’s Deputy Prime Minister and Deputy Leader of the Labour Party, has resigned due to questions over her tax payments related to a property purchase. The resignation follows an inquiry into her tax dealings concerning an apartment in Hove. The investigation determined that she did not fully comply with the ministerial code, though her commitment and integrity were noted. A key point was her lack of expert tax advice. Rayner admitted to undervaluing her taxes when buying the apartment, resulting in a saving of around £40,000 in stamp duty. In her resignation letter, she expressed regret for not seeking tax advice and emphasized her dedication to proper tax payments. She took full responsibility, considering the report’s recommendations and the impact on her family. Prime Minister Keir Starmer accepted her resignation, commending her decision. Rayner also held the position of Housing department head. She was recognized for her outspoken criticism of the Conservative Party’s tax compliance. The Labour Party will now need to select a replacement for her as deputy leader.
