In a significant display of warmth, U.S. President Donald Trump has hailed India as an “amazing country” and Prime Minister Narendra Modi as a “great friend.” The U.S. Embassy in New Delhi publicized these positive remarks, reinforcing India’s status as a vital strategic partner for America within the crucial Indo-Pacific theater.
These accolades follow a recent telephone conversation between the two leaders. During the call, they reportedly focused on strategies to boost bilateral economic cooperation. This engagement came on the heels of crucial talks between Indian and American trade officials concerning a proposed bilateral trade agreement. The potential for this agreement has sparked optimism about India potentially securing a reduction in the significant tariffs, some reaching 50%, that the Trump administration had previously levied. The U.S. had, in August, imposed additional tariffs on Indian products, including a 25% surcharge linked to the purchase of Russian crude oil.
Prime Minister Modi described the conversation as “cordial and constructive,” noting that the leaders reviewed the advancements in their bilateral relationship and discussed pertinent regional and global issues. He affirmed that India and the United States would persevere in their collaborative efforts towards global peace, stability, and prosperity. While Modi’s statement did not directly address trade, the dialogue is understood to be part of ongoing efforts to strengthen economic ties. The recent phone call and subsequent outreach are seen as part of a broader initiative to solidify the comprehensive global strategic partnership, with discussions also encompassing expanded cooperation in key areas such as critical technology, energy, defense, and security.
