Vietnam is confronting a severe natural disaster as torrential downpours have caused widespread flooding and deadly landslides. Authorities have reported 41 confirmed deaths across six provinces, while search and rescue missions continue for nine people who remain unaccounted for. The impact on housing is staggering, with over 52,000 homes submerged and close to 62,000 residents displaced. The relentless rain, exceeding 150 cm in some areas over three days, has also caused significant infrastructure damage, including impassable roads due to landslides, and widespread power outages affecting about a million households. Efforts are focused on rescuing people trapped by the rising floodwaters, many on their rooftops. The region, a vital hub for coffee production and tourism, is facing immense challenges. Adding to concerns, Typhoon Kalmaegi is forecast to make landfall, potentially bringing more heavy rainfall, especially to the central coast and highlands, and increasing the risk of flash floods and landslides.
