Tension Rises Between Washington and Paris After US Exit During France Speech

During a Security Council session on Monday, senior American diplomat Dan Negriya interrupted a speech by France’s permanent representative, Jérôme Bonnafont, by pulling the U.S. delegation out of the room. Negriya condemned what he called France’s “show‑off morality” on human‑rights issues and warned that Washington would not tolerate the French delegation’s “arrogant and insulting language.”

The walk‑out came on the same day the UN General Assembly voted to give Volker Türk a second term as High Commissioner for Human Rights. Although Turkish re‑election received overwhelming support – 144 votes in favor, 10 against and 13 abstentions – both the United States and Russia lodged formal objections. The United States, in particular, has repeatedly singled out France for defending countries it labels as oppressive, such as North Korea, Nicaragua, Mali and Russia.

France responded by posting a pointed tweet from its Geneva mission, noting that America, once a symbol of human‑rights advocacy, now stands isolated alongside regimes like North Korea and Russia. The tweet further suggested that the world would no longer heed U.S. statements on rights.

Analysts see the incident as a symptom of deteriorating transatlantic relations, with the Trump administration’s confrontational style exposing deep‑seated disagreements over diplomatic etiquette and the framing of human‑rights debates at the United Nations.
