The latest round of United States‑mediated talks between Israel and Lebanon concluded in Rome on July 16, edging the two nations toward a pilot zone in the south of Lebanon. Under the proposed arrangement, Israeli forces would pull back from designated zones, handing control to the Lebanese army, which would also assume responsibility for neutralising Hezbollah armaments. Negotiators focused on implementing the June 26 framework agreement reached in Washington, detailing the steps, timeline, and conditions for the Israeli withdrawal, Lebanese deployment, and the re‑establishment of Lebanese state authority. Both sides stressed that the timeline remains flexible, reflecting Lebanon’s desire to regain sovereignty without sparking internal turmoil, and Israel’s insistence on security guarantees to prevent a Hezbollah resurgence.
