    Sitaram Yechury: CPI(M) General Secretary Sitaram Yechury, a strong advocate of the opposition alliance in the country, passed away on Thursday (September 12). He breathed his last at the age of 72 in Delhi AIIMS. Comrade Sitaram Yechury was one of the top leftist leaders of India. Yechury single-handedly kept the ‘red flag’ flying high for 5 decades.     Sitaram Yechury: CPM leader Sitaram Yechury passed away, breathed his last in AIIMS at the age of 72

    Sitaram Yechury was born on 12 August 1952 in a Telugu Brahmin family in Chennai, the capital of Tamil Nadu. Father SS Yechury was an engineer in the Andhra Pradesh Transport Department and mother Kalpakam Yechury was a government officer. Sitaram Yechury’s wife and children Sitaram Yechury’s wife is BBC’s renowned journalist Seema Chishti. Yechury’s marriage to Seema Chishti was his second marriage, Yechury’s first wife was the daughter of leftist activist and feminist Dr. Veena Mazumdar. He has a son and a daughter from her. Yechury received his early education from All Saints High School in Hyderabad. After this, he came to Delhi in 1969 for further studies. He took admission in President’s Estate School, New Delhi and stood first at the all India level in the Central Board of Secondary Education Higher Secondary Examination. After this, he studied BA (Hons) in Economics from St. Stephen’s College, Delhi. He did his M.A. in Economics from Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), securing first division in both. He enrolled in JNU to pursue a PhD in Economics, which was cancelled with his arrest during the Emergency. Yechury became actively involved in student politics at JNU. He joined the Student Federation of India in 1974 and later became a member of the CPM. Subsequently, he joined the CPI(M) and continued its objectives at JNU, where he promoted leftist ideologies. He served as the president of the JNU Students’ Union from 1977 to 1978. He has held several key positions within the party, including a member of the Politburo and Central Committee in 1992. Yechury’s strategic thinking and eloquence have made him one of the most influential voices in Indian leftist politics. He became the party’s general secretary in 2015, succeeding Prakash Karat. He was re-elected to the post in 2018. Sitaram Yechury kept raising the red flag despite challenges. Yechury’s tenure as the general secretary of CPI(M) began in April 2015. In 2008, when the CPM withdrew support from Manmohan Singh’s government over the civil nuclear agreement with the US, he made a lot of headlines. Sitaram Yechury has been the general secretary of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) and the leader of the party’s parliamentary group. He was awarded the Best Parliamentarian Award in the Rajya Sabha in 2016. He was arrested while staying in JNU during the Emergency. After this, he was elected President of the JNU Students Union three times in a row. In 1984, he was included in the Central Committee of CPI M. In 2015, he was elected the general secretary of the party. Yechury was elected to the Rajya Sabha from West Bengal in 2005. He raised many issues in the House. Sitaram Yechury was an Indian politician and the fifth general secretary of the Communist Party of India – Marxist (CPI-M). He is currently the leader of the parliamentary group of the CPI-M and a member of the party’s politburo. He was known as a renowned columnist, economist and social activist. Sitaram Yechury is known for carrying forward the coalition building legacy of former party general secretary Harkishan Singh Surjeet. He collaborated with P Chidambaram to draft the common minimum program for the United Front government in 1996. He played a key role in coalition building efforts during the formation of the United Progressive Alliance government in 2004. Under Yechury’s leadership, the party has faced many challenging times, including electoral setbacks and internal conflicts. Despite these challenges, he remained steadfast in his commitment to the party’s principles and goals. Despite facing criticism, Yechury has remained a firm supporter of his ideas which earned him respect from both supporters and critics. He has been inspiring many young politicians within and outside the CPI(M). He recently gave a statement on the Kolkata incident. He also supported the opposition coalition India in the petition filed regarding the new criminal laws. He has a distinct identity as a leftist leader. He always raises his voice for leftist ideology.
