Sikyong Penpa Tsering, President of the Tibetan Government-in-Exile, has voiced strong criticism of China’s interference in Tibetan religious affairs, specifically regarding the selection of the Dalai Lama’s successor. He expressed concern over China’s efforts to dictate the spiritual leadership of Tibet, challenging the government’s motives and disregard for religious freedom amidst preparations for the Dalai Lama’s upcoming birthday celebrations. Tsering highlighted that the Golden Urn, which China claims is essential for recognizing the Dalai Lama, was introduced in 1793, long after previous Dalai Lamas had been recognized, and was rarely utilized in the selection process. This follows China’s recent statements that the central government in Beijing must approve the Dalai Lama’s reincarnation. The Chinese Foreign Ministry maintains that Tibetan Buddhism, considered a religion with Chinese characteristics, should adhere to traditional methods for reincarnation, including the use of the Golden Urn. Tsering also addressed key areas of concern, including youth leadership, religious freedom, and the importance of international participation in the Dalai Lama’s birthday celebrations. He emphasized the importance of building future leaders and engaging the youth in the Tibetan movement. He provided details about the scale and diplomatic presence at the upcoming celebrations. Concerning the Dalai Lama’s reincarnation, Tsering asserted that the decision rests solely with the Gaden Phodrang and that Tibetans will never accept China’s involvement for political gain. He also accused the Chinese government of attempting to erase Tibetan identity by targeting its language and religion. The Dalai Lama confirmed his decision to continue the institution of the Dalai Lama and reaffirmed that the Gaden Phodrang Trust has exclusive authority in the selection of the next Dalai Lama.
