A 4.8 magnitude earthquake struck Afghanistan on Thursday, as reported by the National Center for Seismology (NCS). The earthquake occurred at a depth of 135km. A previous earthquake hit late Wednesday night, with a shallow depth of 10km. Earthquakes at a shallow depth are generally more dangerous. The World Food Programme (WFP) is providing emergency assistance to Afghanistan’s quake-affected Kunar and Nangarhar provinces, where over 1,400 people have died and more than 3,000 have been injured. The initial aid includes food supplies and high-energy biscuits, with plans for more aid shipments. Rescue efforts are being hampered by blocked roads, difficult terrain, and continuing aftershocks. India has sent 21 tonnes of aid to Kabul, including essential supplies like blankets and medical consumables.
