Chinese President Xi Jinping welcomed Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit. Prior to the summit, the two leaders held bilateral discussions in Tianjin. Their meeting occurred amidst global economic uncertainties and strained relations between the US and China. The Prime Minister’s presence at the SCO summit marked his first visit to China in seven years, a visit that followed the Galwan Valley clash. The Indian community in China greeted him with enthusiastic slogans. A cultural program was also attended, featuring Chinese artists performing with Indian classical instruments.
