Russia thanks Bangladesh for abstaining in UNGA on Ukraine decision

By Press Trust of India: Russia on Saturday thanked Bangladesh for abstaining from voting within the UN General Assembly on a decision that underscored the necessity to attain “comprehensive and lasting peace” in Ukraine, days after Moscow protested Dhaka’s choice to not permit the docking of Russian ships below Western sanctions.

Bangladesh, together with India have been among the many 32 nations that abstained because the 193-member General Assembly adopted the decision “Principles of the Charter of the United Nations” underlying a complete, simply and lasting peace in Ukraine, put ahead by Ukraine and its supporters.

The non-binding decision, which acquired 141 votes in favour and 7 towards, underscored the “need to reach, as soon as possible, a comprehensive, just and lasting peace in Ukraine in line with the principles of the Charter of the United Nations.”

“The non-binding “anti-Russian” decision of the UNGA won’t carry the world nearer to ending the Ukraine battle, Moscow’s everlasting envoy to the UN Vassily Nebenzia stated. Thank you, Bangladesh, for abstaining,” the Russian Embassy right here in Dhaka stated in a tweet on Friday, a day after the UN decision.

This comes days after Dhaka stated its choice to dam the docking of Russian ships below US sanctions was unlikely to have an effect on the prevailing “friendly” ties with Russia as it’s a “tested and long-term friend” of Moscow. In latest months, Bangladesh has disallowed some Russian ships to anchor at its ports as they got here below western sanctions towards Moscow as a fallout of the continuing Ukraine conflict.

Following this improvement, Russia summoned Bangladesh’s ambassador to Moscow to protest Dhaka’s choice to dam the entry of Russian ships below Western sanctions. Last month, Dhaka knowledgeable Moscow that they might ship any ship, besides the sanctioned ones, to Bangladesh’s ports.

The ongoing battle in Ukraine has dragged on for a 12 months now, and the US and its allies on Friday introduced a recent spherical of crippling sanctions on Russia.
