A disagreement has emerged between France and U.S. Senator Marco Rubio regarding the impact of France’s recognition of Palestinian statehood on the Israeli-Hamas ceasefire talks. The French Foreign Ministry, using its official X account, contested Rubio’s claims, directly countering that the recognition of Palestine did not lead to the breakdown of hostage negotiations. The post included a timeline that showed the timing of events; Netanyahu’s statement, followed by Macron’s announcement where he mentioned the recognition of a Palestinian State, while underlying that the Hamas has to be disarmed and has no role to play in the governance of the Gaza Strip. This exchange signifies a rise in diplomatic tensions after Rubio criticized the French decision, previously calling it ‘reckless.’ Rubio had expressed concerns that Macron’s initiative would benefit Hamas and hinder peace efforts. He alleged that Hamas abandoned negotiations immediately after France’s announcement. Macron previously stated France’s intention to recognize Palestinian statehood at the upcoming United Nations General Assembly. Australia, Canada, Portugal, and the United Kingdom are also expected to recognize Palestine during the Assembly. Belgium has also advocated for recognition and sanctions against Israel. France and Saudi Arabia will co-chair a conference in New York on September 22, dedicated to the Two-State Solution for the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Macron also urged the US to reverse its decision to deny visas to Palestinian officials, emphasizing the need for Palestinian representation at the conference.
