Rome Meeting Aims to Expand Southern Lebanon Pilot Zone and Finalise Security Framework

The State Department confirmed that a U.S.-led round of talks between Israel and Lebanon will convene in Rome between August 4 and 6. The primary goal is to widen the pilot zone in southern Lebanon, resolve outstanding border issues, and put into effect the agreement framework signed earlier this year.

Technical delegations from both capitals will meet to discuss how to increase Lebanese governmental authority in the south, remove verified weapons held by militant groups, and lay the groundwork for a comprehensive peace and security treaty. The meeting follows Israel’s defense forces’ recent return from the first pilot area operation and the Lebanese claim that Israeli forces tried to obstruct their deployment.

U.S. officials emphasized that the pilot’s early successes will guide a phased expansion and that the trilateral framework is the cornerstone for a sustainable peace process between the two neighbours.
